Francigena Cycle Route in the Susa Valley
The Susa Valley opens from the Turin plain toward the Mont Cenis and Montgenevre passes, historic connections between Europe and northern Italy. Along the road that has characterized the valley since Roman times, a new route unfolded in the Middle Ages, resulting in the emergence of small, characteristic villages along the road and the Dora Riparia River. It is here that the Ciclovia takes shape, retracing the ancient route of the Ancient French Road, alternating between meadows and cultivated fields and pleasant wooded areas. As a whole, the Ciclovia Francigena passes through 15 municipalities up to the Mont Cenis Pass. The first 35 km, rising from the valley floor to the halfway point, are now accessible, passing through villages with ancient history, alongside castles and parish churches dominated from above by the majestic Abbey of the Sacra di San Michele. The historic center and lakes of Avigliana are worth a detour from the main route.
